Therapy for highly sensitive people in Portland
You can read every room except your own. You sense what others need, adjust without thinking, and somewhere along the way lost track of what you actually want. Many of the people I see call themselves chameleons. I'm Paul Walsh, LMFT, and I work with highly sensitive people at Quiet Light Counseling in Johns Landing, Portland, and online across Oregon, Washington and California.

What it means to be highly sensitive
High sensitivity is a normal, inborn trait, not a disorder. Psychologist Elaine Aron, who first described it, estimates it in 20 to 30 percent of people. Researchers call it sensory processing sensitivity. Highly sensitive people tend to:
- Think deeply and take longer to decide
- Get overstimulated by noise, crowds, pressure or a packed schedule
- Feel emotions strongly and pick up on other people's feelings fast
- Notice small details others miss
None of that is a flaw. It's a different way of taking in the world, and it comes with real strengths. It also comes with real costs when you live at a pace built for someone else.
The chameleon pattern
Some sensitive people learn early to keep the peace by reading everyone else. You know what the room needs before anyone says it. You adjust your mood, your opinions, even your plans, so things stay smooth.
It works, until you notice you can't answer simple questions like "what do you want?" You might lose yourself in relationships, say yes when you mean no, or feel oddly absent from your own life. That last part can tip into feeling far away or unreal, especially after a long stretch of overwhelm.
How therapy helps
We don't try to make you less sensitive. We help you work with it:
- Understanding your wiring. Naming what overwhelms you and what restores you, so you stop judging yourself for needing it.
- Finding your own signal. Noticing what you feel and want before you check what everyone else needs.
- Boundaries that feel kind. Practicing small, honest noes without guilt taking over.
- Recovering from overwhelm. Practical ways to come down after a hard day, a hard conversation or too much noise.
- Showing up as yourself. In relationships, at work and with family, without disappearing to keep the peace.
Common questions
Is being highly sensitive a disorder?
No. High sensitivity is a normal, inborn temperament trait, found in roughly 20 to 30 percent of people. It isn't something to cure. Therapy helps when overwhelm, anxiety or people-pleasing start costing you.
What is a chameleon personality?
It isn't a formal diagnosis. It's a way of describing people who shift to match whoever they're with, often so smoothly they lose track of their own preferences. It usually starts as a smart way to stay safe or keep the peace.
How do I stop losing myself in a relationship?
Start small: notice what you feel before you respond, and practice saying what you prefer in low-stakes moments. Therapy gives you a steady place to rebuild that sense of yourself, so closeness doesn't cost you your own voice.
Do you see highly sensitive men?
Yes. Sensitivity shows up in men too, and many have learned to hide it. I'm glad to be someone you can talk to about it openly.
Can sensitivity lead to feeling disconnected or unreal?
It can. When overwhelm runs high for a long stretch, some people start to feel numb, foggy or far away from themselves. It's a known stress response, and it usually eases as the overwhelm does. See my derealization page.
Do you offer online therapy for highly sensitive people?
Yes. I see clients by secure video anywhere in Oregon, Washington and California. Many sensitive people find it easier to open up from their own quiet space.
