When grief doesn't look the way you expected

People expect grief to be sadness. Often it's more than that. It can be exhaustion, irritability, guilt, relief, or a strange numbness where you thought the tears would be. Some people feel foggy or far away from their own lives for a while. Others keep busy and wonder why they feel nothing at all.

None of that means you're grieving wrong. It means something important ended, and your mind and body are still catching up.

How grief counseling helps

In our work together, we make room for the loss without forcing it into stages or a timeline. We'll talk about the person or the life you lost, the parts that are hard to say out loud, and what you need now to get through ordinary days. When you want them, I'll offer practical ways to handle the hard moments: anniversaries, holidays, the first time you go back to a place you shared.

The goal isn't to get over it. It's to carry it in a way that lets you live, and to stay connected to what you lost while you do.

Common questions about grief

What kinds of grief do you help with?

The death of someone you love, the end of a marriage, a pregnancy or fertility loss, a diagnosis, a move, or the quiet loss of a future you expected.

Is it normal to feel numb or unreal after a loss?

Yes. Numbness and derealization are common grief responses. They're a way your mind protects you while it catches up.

How long does grief last?

There's no set timeline. Grief usually softens and changes shape rather than ending on a date. If months have passed and you still can't function the way you need to, or you feel nothing at all, that's a good reason to get support, not a sign you're failing.

What's the difference between grief and depression?

Grief tends to come in waves tied to the loss, with moments of relief in between. Depression is more constant and often colors how you see yourself. They can overlap. In our first sessions we'll sort out what you're carrying so the support fits.

Can you grieve something that isn't a death?

Yes. Divorce, estrangement, a career that ended, a move away from people you love, a body that changed after illness, the parenthood you imagined. These losses are real, and they often go unrecognized, which makes them heavier.

Why do I feel guilty when I have a good day?

Many people feel that laughing or resting means they're forgetting. It doesn't. Good days are part of grieving, and making room for them is one of the ways you keep going while staying connected to what you lost.

Do you take insurance for grief counseling?

Yes. I'm in-network with Regence, Aetna, Moda and First Choice Health. Grief counseling is usually covered when it's affecting your daily life; check your plan for details.
